Stellaria media (L.) Vill.
Diagnostic description:
A much branched, annual. Stems to 30 cm long, with a single line of hairs down the side. The upper leaves ovate, sessile; the lower ones spathulate to 4 cm long, on long petioles; dark to bright green. Flowers white, about 8 mm across. Petals 5, deeply bilobed; sepals 4 to 6 cm long, hairy or glabrous.
Distribution:
Local: Fairly common and widespread on parts of the Upper Rock and as a weed of cultivated plots around the town area.
Global: Found throughout Europe.
Ecology:
Flowers from (January) February, March, April to May (June).
Habitat:
Grows on open ground, clearings, waysides and waste ground.
