Rhamnus lycioides L. subsp oleoides (L.) Jahand. & Maire
Diagnostic description:
A dioecious, hairless, evergreen shrub to 2 m tall with spiny stems. Leaves alternate or in clusters, obovate to obovate-elliptical, blunt but sometimes emarginate, entire, coriaceous, between 1 cm and 4cm long. Flowers in dense axillary clusters; calyx 4 to 5 mm across, with 4 (or 5) greenish-yellow sepals; petals generally absent. Fruit spherical, greenish-yellow when ripe.
Distribution:
Local: Fairly common in Gibraltar. Found throughout the Upper Rock and southern parts.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from March, April to May.
Habitat:
Grows in maquis and garigue.
