Diagnostic description:
An erect or ascending annual, solitary or loosely tufted. Stems 10 to 30 cm tall, or more. Ligules about 0.5 mm long, squared off at the top. Leaf blades hairy, light green, to 20 cm long. Spikelets numerous, in a dense spike 5 to 10 cm long. Spikelets in clusters of three, the central floret bisexual and fertile and the lateral ones barren or male. Glumes with stiff awns and lemmas with stiff awns 2 to 7 cm long.
Distribution:
Local: Very common and widespread throughout Gibraltar.
Global: Found throughout the Mediterranean region.
Ecology:
Flowers from (March) April, May to June.
Habitat:
Grows in clearings and waysides; open ground.
