Bromus diandrus Roth
A solitary or tufted annual, with erect or ascending stems up to 90 cm tall, which are finely hairy below the inflorescence. Leaf blade 10 to 30 cm long; 4 to 10 mm wide; flat, hairy. Ligule 3 to 5 mm long, fringed. Inflorescence a lax or dense, nodding panicle up to 25 cm long; lower nodes with 1 to 6 branches in whorls; branches 1 to 10 cm long with 1 to 2 spikelets each. Spikelets with 7 to 10 florets; up to 5.5 cm long, rough-hairy, flattened, ovate-elliptical becoming wedge-shaped. Lower glume 17 to 23 mm long, 5-veined; the upper one 21 to 32 mm long, 7-veined; both with wide papery margin. Lemma 25 to 30 mm long, keeled, with 2 teeth at the tip; a stiff awn 3.5 to 6 cm long arises 4 to 7 mm below the tip of the lemma.
Local: Fairly common in Gibraltar. Widespread on the Upper Rock and elsewhere.
Global: Found in south and south-west Europe, north Africa and south-west Asia.
Flowers from March, April to May (June).
Grows on pastures, bare ground and roadsides.
