A robust bulbous perennial with stems from 50 to 90 cm long, often purplish at the top. Bulb about 5 cm across. Leaves 5 to 12, all basal, shiny green, linear, up to 50 cm long, 1 to 3 cm broad. Flowers about 12 mm across, violet-blue, borne in a long raceme of up to 150 flowers. Pedicels violet. Bracts very short, about 1.5 mm long.
Local: Rare in Gibraltar; only seen at Rooke Battery
Global: Found in South Europe and North-West Africa.
