Zantedeschia aethiopica Spreng.
A rhizomatous, moisture-loving, herbaceous perennial, evergreen where there is plenty of moisture and deciduous where there is a dry season. Leavesdark glossy green, arrow-shaped up to 45cm long. Flowers on stout, leafless stems 0.6cm to 0.8cm tall, with a pure white funnel-shaped spathe up to 25cm long, surrounding a yellow spadix up to 9cmlong.
A native of South Africa, it is often planted in gardens throughout the worldand has escaped from cultivation and become naturalised. It is rare in Gibraltar but is naturalised in Inglis Way and Bruce’s Farm.
